EMA and MMA are both liquid monomers used for creating acrylic nails, but they are very different. In contrast, MMA (methyl methacrylate) is a much harder, more rigid, and less flexible material. As early as the 1970’s the U.S. FDA declared MMA to be a “poisonous and deleterious substance” unsuitable for use in cosmetic nail products due to a history of injuries and adverse reactions. As such, its use in nail products is strictly banned by many state boards of cosmetology in the U.S. because it can be highly damaging to the natural nail. Its use in certain medical fields, such as bone cement, is permitted but is subject to strict controls and different regulations.

Getting the right liquid to powder ratio is crucial for a smooth, durable acrylic application. The ideal ratio is typically 1.5 parts powder to 1 part liquid. Too much liquid will create a runny, weak mix that can cause lifting, while too little liquid will make the acrylic dry and crumbly, leading to bumpy, uneven nails. To achieve the perfect consistency, dip your brush into the monomer to saturate it, then gently press it into the acrylic powder to form a smooth, “creamy” bead. Practice creating small beads on a paper towel to perfect your technique.

It is important to consider your monomer containers to always be full, especially when the liquid level is low.  The “empty space” in the container is actually full of vapors, and it is the vapors that you experience as “the smell.”  Therefore, the more liquid that is in the container the less you will experience the characteristic monomer odor.
You can also reduce the odor by working in a room with an open window or using a dust collector with a filter.
